Whale Report: August 20, 2023 – T75Bs and a Peckish Sea Otter

Whale Report: August 20, 2023 – T75Bs and a Peckish Sea Otter

August 20, 2023 – We had another beautiful day spent on the water in the San Juan Islands. Fortunately, we had a very close report of some Bigg’s Killer Whales just as we left Friday Harbor. A group known as the T75Bs were traveling through Griffin Bay. They traveled along to an island known as Dinner Island and spent a good amount of time living up to that name by hunting several harbor seals. The whales were incredibly close to the shoreline, with several moments where they were in such shallow water that they couldn’t fully submerge their dorsal fins! After spending time with the whales, we headed south to check out the steller sea lions at whale rocks and had quite the rare sighting! A sea otter! The sea otter was having a late lunch of two giant sea urchins! These animals need to eat about 25% of their body weight every single day! As we were headed back to Friday Harbor, the Bigg’s Killer Whales traveled THROUGH the harbor and we had to wait for them to leave before we could to get back to our dock! What a fun end to a fun trip!
