Whale Report: September 9, 2023 – The T18s and a feeding Humpback!

Whale Report: September 9, 2023 – The T18s and a feeding Humpback!

September 9, 2023 – We headed to the south from Friday Harbor down towards Cattle Pass and out into the Strait of Juan De Fuca. We ended up several miles south of the San Juan Islands, almost to the entrance of the Puget Sound to spend some time with a group of Bigg’s Killer Whales known as the T18s. This family is three generations, made up of grandma T18 “Esperanza”, her daughter T19 “Nootka” and her two adult grandsons, T19B “Galiano” and T19C “Spouter”. Often, when we see this impressive group, they’re split two and two with each of the females paired with one of the boys. Today was no exception. We got some quick looks at T18 and T19C and then headed over to the other pair. T19 “Nootka” was traveling with her eldest “Galiano” and we had some great looks of them surfacing with Mt. Baker in the background. Finally, on our way home, we got some really quick looks at a humpback whale that was feeding! It even lunged through a huge bait ball at the surface!
