Western Prince II PM: August 31, 2016

The timing was perfect to check out the kids (harbor seals) in the pool.  Approximately 20 Harbor Seals were swimming in the upwellings in Cattle Pass.  Next we headed out into the Strait of Juan de Fuca.  The water was glassy flat and seemed to blend into the sky to create some interesting lighting. Reports were that we had members of all three resident pods in the area today.  They were very spread out and we had encounters with 3 small groups.  We saw K34 “Cali” (15 year old male) traveling with his nephew K38 “Comet” (12 year old male).  In the area we also had K20 Spock (30 year old female), Comet’s mother and I believe members of the L4 subgroup including L106 Lapis (13 year old female) and her calf L123, born in 2015.  During our encounter we saw lots of different behaviors, including tail slaps, pec slaps, spyhops, foraging and a few breaches!  On the way home we spotted a Minke Whale and had a nice visit with some Steller Sea Lions.
