Whale Report: August 6, 2023 – Yogi and Zephyr

August 6, 2023 PM – We had a gorgeous trip out of Friday Harbor today. We headed to the northern part of the San Juan Islands, near Patos Island to check out two different humpback whales that were feeding in the area. When we first got on scene, we had an amazing close up surfacing from BCZ0414 “Zephyr” just in front of the Patos Island Lighthouse. We watched her for a while as she surfaced in glassy calm waters and beautiful pastel lighting. Her exhalations seemed to hang in the air forever! We also got some great looks as she lifted her white flukes for dives. Then we traveled about ½ mile away to where another humpback, BCY0409 “Yogi” was feeding. This whale is named for the white markings on their left fluke that resemble a bear’s face. We also got some great looks at them as they surfaced with the orange and purple lighting as a backdrop. Perfect conditions for an amazing encounter with these two whales!
