Whale Report: May 31, 2023 PM – Inter Island with the T123s

May 31, 2023 PM – We left the dock and headed east. We had a report of a well known family group of Bigg’s (marine mammal eating) killer whales in that direction. On our way we stopped to check out the Bald Eagles nest on Lopez Island. One of the adults was in the nest with the chick which I have yet to see. Next we headed through Pea Vine Pass into Rosario Strait. There we came upon a couple of Steller Sea Lions trying to claim a perch on a red channel marker. It was fun to watch them jump up repeatedly, then either sliding off or being chased off by the other sea lion. That perch was important as there were predators near by!! We had a great encounter with Sidney (mom b-1985), her oldest, 23 year old Stanley and his two younger sisters, 11 year old Lucky and 5 year old Darcy. While going through my pictures it was cool to notice the different sizes and shapes of their eye patches. This is another very reliable way to ID Orcas. We said good by to the orcas then made one last stop to check out Harbor Seals on the way home. It was another super beautiful day in the Salish Sea.
