Family Friendly Activities Around San Juan Island

Family Friendly Activities Around San Juan Island

We have a unique history here in the San Juan Islands. There are many spots to enjoy educational and cultural experiences, perfect for families looking to explore the islands. Here are some of our favorite family friendly activities to enjoy while visiting Friday Harbor.

San Juan Island has some of the best tide pooling opportunities in the area. False Bay is a lovely place to take kids, especially if they enjoy beach activities and exploring nature. While False Bay is known for its natural beauty and wildlife, there are several activities that make it enjoyable for children. At low tide, the water recedes from its shallow mudflats, revealing marine life that lies beneath the water for kids to explore.

For a fun place to run around while enjoying local art be sure to stop at the San Juan Island Sculpture Park . This outdoor sculpture park featuring over 150 sculptures by local and international artists. Entry into the park is by donation and is a beautiful outdoor space dotted with installations unique to the area.

The island also offers a number of educational opportunities. Make sure to visit the Center for Whale Research’s Education and Outreach Center. The center features a variety of interactive exhibits that allow visitors of all ages to learn about the biology and behavior of orcas and other marine animals in the Salish Sea. There are touch-screen displays, a virtual reality experience, and other multimedia exhibits that make learning about marine life fun and engaging. It’s the perfect place to get a well-rounded history on the whales of the area before or after observing some of these magnificent creatures in the wild.

To expand your knowledge of the area, the San Juan Historical Museum showcases the island’s history, including exhibits on the indigenous people, early pioneers, and the Pig War. Take a self-guided tour through the historic buildings and learn about the island’s past through exhibits, artifacts, and interpretive displays.

The Whale Museum is also located in Friday Harbor and focuses on the marine life of the Salish Sea, including the orcas that inhabit the waters around San Juan Island. Explore exhibits on whale biology, conservation efforts, and the cultural significance of whales to the local Native American tribes. The museum offers walk-through exhibits that feature a life sized killer whale model, a favorite for young kids.

San Juan Islands Museum of Art features contemporary art from the Pacific Northwest and beyond. SJIMA showcases a rotating collection of contemporary art by local, regional, and international artists. The museum exhibits a diverse range of artistic mediums, including paintings, sculptures, photography, mixed media, and installations.

Our island community may be small, but we offer and enjoy a wide array of cultural, educational and exploratory experiences not too far from the hustle and bustle of Seattle.
