Whale Report: June 28, 2023 PM – Raptor the Humpback

June 28, 2023 PM – We had a beautiful sunny afternoon and were excited to see what the Salish Sea had to offer.  We headed north searching along the way.  As we entered Boundary Pass we stopped at a red channel marker where two Steller Sea Lions were hauled out.  Next we ventured into Canada to follow up on a report of a humpback whale.  Pretty quickly we encountered a Humpback Whale named “Raptor.”  She was traveling west in Boundary Pass just off the Saturna Island Shoreline.  She was zigzagging along and surprised us when she came up on the opposite side of the boat that we had expected to see her.   Humpbacks can easily reach 45 feet in length and can weigh up to 80,000 pounds, so seeing them at 100 meters away is amazing.   Raptor kept on with her unpredictable travel pattern so we got to see her from near and far with many different back drops.  We were close to Monarch Head when it was time to leave so we went to take a look at the cool rock formations.  Next we headed back to America and found some Harbor Porpoise in front of the Turn Point Lighthouse on Stuart Island.  We also spotted two Bald Eagles perched in the same tree!  Next it was on to look for Harbor Seals which we found on Sentinel Rock.  We also saw some Big Horned Sheep, the Mouflons on Spieden Island before heading back to Friday Harbor.    We had such a beautiful day and saw much of what the Salish Sea had to offer.
