May 2, 2024 – T123 Killer Whales

May 2, 2024 – The search was on from the moment we left the dock. You just never know where whales might turn up. We headed north hoping to follow up on an earlier report but to no avail. As we travelled between Spieden and the Cactus Islands we checked out some Bald Eagles. We headed along the Stuart Island shoreline and checked out the cliff face at Lover’s Leap near the Turn Point Lighthouse. It is so deep right there we can drive the boat up to within almost an arms length from the wall. While checking this out Captain JB was on the radio coordinating with other boats. We decided to head to Canada and search along the east side of Moresby Island. While there we got a report from a boat just 10 minutes away that they had found the T123’s! Woo hoo! We were off to see one of our favorite family groups of Bigg’s killer whales. This family is made up of T123, the 39 year old mom known as Sidney, 123A, her 24 year old son named Stanley and her 2 daughters, Lucky(12) and Darcey (6). We ended up having a very cool encounter in Active Pass. The tide was running and the whales were searching for a meal. There were loads of Harbor Seal hauled out on a nearby rock on the north side of the channel and dozen plus Steller Sea Lions on the south side. The whales circled near the seal haul out and seemed to enjoy swimming in the wake of one of the two BC Ferries that came through while were were there. We got some great looks and then it was time to head back to Friday Harbor.
