Whale Report: June 25, 2023 – Classic PNW with the T123s

June 25, 2023 AM – Today was an interesting one in the San Juan Islands. We started off the day with quite a bit of fog in certain areas. We stopped south of Friday Harbor to assess the fog and check out some harbor seals hauled out on the rocks. We also spotted a bald eagle pair up in a tree. With fog obscuring the south ends of the islands, we headed north. Fortunately, we didn’t go very far before we got a report of some killer whales to the east of us so off we went. It turned out to be a family known as the T123s. They were traveling north through Rosario Strait. We got some incredible views of them with the lingering fog and gorgeous forest backdrops. They eventually headed for the northern Orcas Island shoreline and with the lighting, it was a photographer’s dream encounter! Beautifully calm, glassy water with the backlit blows of the whales silhouetted against the tall and dark Orcas tree-line. It was beautiful! We were even treated to a close pass from the family! You couldn’t have asked for a better encounter!
