Whale Report: September 3, 2023 – Chainsaw and Friends

September 3, 2023 – Today’s trip took us to the south part of the San Juan Islands, out towards the open straits. We started off our trip by checking out some Steller Sea Lions on whale rocks and then headed out towards a report of some Bigg’s Killer Whales. The animals we found were a group of three whales, a mother and son known as T65 “Whidbey” and T63 “Chainsaw”, and another female known as T46C2 “Sam”. “Chainsaw” is a killer whale that many whale watchers up and down the Westcoast dream of seeing because of his distinct, notched dorsal fin. He is also one of the older males in the population at 45 years old. Both “Whidbey” and “Chainsaw” are normally only seen in the Salish Sea during the spring months so having them show up in September was quite the surprise! They were also seen up in Juneau, Alaska, a few weeks ago!
