Whales in front of Victoria Harbor

Whales in front of Victoria Harbor

July 28, 2024 – We started off this trip with a very quick look at a humpback whale in the Straits of Juan de Fuca known as BCX1702 “Uluka” and then we continued west into Canada. We often talk about how the whales in the Salish Sea are urban whales and today was a perfect example of that! We caught up to the Bigg’s killer whale family known as the T109A2s as they traveled incredibly close to the shoreline of Victoria. Many shore watchers got an incredible view as the whales passed by, sometimes only feet from the shoreline. It was such a cool encounter, especially when the whales passed The Unity Wall along the Victoria Harbor Breakwater. With the beautiful murals that were painted by First Nations artists and the excited people running along the breakwater to keep up with the whales, it was quite the dynamic scene!
