Whale Report: July 1, 2023 – Big Mama and Fader

Whale Report: July 1, 2023 – Big Mama and Fader

July 1, 2023 AM – We headed north out of the San Juan Islands and up towards a Canadian island known as Tumbo. There, we spotted two adult humpback whales traveling together! We were able to identify them as BCY0195 “Fader” and BCY0324 “Big Mama”. The two were slowly surfacing and traveling together in the current lines. We had several great looks at “Fader” as he lifted his flukes and showed off the beautiful pattern underneath. “Big Mama” never raised her tail but we were able to ID her based on her iconic dorsal fin. She is one of the most well-known humpback whales in the area, having been first spotted in the Salish Sea in 1997 and has brought back seven calves in her time! After spending time with them, we cruised back through a very narrow pass known as Gorgenson Pass and headed back to Friday Harbor.
