Double Humpback Whales

Double Humpback Whales

May 24, 2024- It was a classic pacific northwest kind of day with gray clouds and intermittent showers but we were determined to make the most of the day. We had a lovely encounter with two humpback whales known as BCZ0298 “Split Fin” and BCY0995 “Smiley”. There is something magical about watching humpback whales in the moody, rainy weather. We had some beautiful looks at the two as they traveled calmly together and we even got a few looks at their flukes. “Split Fin” was named for the slices in his dorsal fin and “Smiley” was named for the unique markings on her fluke that look like a smile. Both are well known whales here in the Salish Sea and have been spotted returning to this area for many years.
