Whale Report: July 22, 2023 – T Party

July 22, 2023 AM – Today’s trip took us north of the San Juan Islands to the outer Canadian gulf islands! We spent some time with three different families of Bigg’s Killer Whales that were traveling together through an area we call the Bell Chain Islands. This collection of shallow reefs and islands was a beautiful place to watch as this group of whales socialized and were active at the surface. We got to see several breaches and tail lobs from various members of the T65Bs, T34s and T37s. The whales eventually made their way into a pass called Tumbo passage, a gorgeous area between Tumbo Island and Saturna Island. They hugged the cliffy shoreline as they continued to socialize. We got some great looks at the newest member of the T37 family line, T37B3, who was first spotted only a few months ago! It was wonderful seeing this tiny calf surfacing next to mom T37B “Harold” and grandma T37 “Rocky”.
