Whale Report: May 21, 2023 – The Multigenerational T124A Family

May 21, 2023 – We headed out from Friday Harbor and headed towards a report of some animals moving south down Haro Strait. It turned out to be Bigg’s Killer Whale family, the T124As. The group consisted of mom T124A “Kittiwake”, her eldest daughter T124A1 “Bonapartes”, her fourth daughter T124A4 “Sabio” and grandchild T124A41, and her two youngest children T124A6 “Kasuun” and T124A7. They were traveling along and suddenly switched directions! They ended up heading north and at one point started porpoising quickly! Porpoising behavior is when they shoot out of the water at fast speeds. It only lasted for a brief moment before they resumed traveling together and we aren’t sure what triggered it but it was incredible to watch! We continued to Spieden Island where we spotted a lovely eagle perched in the shade of a tree! Another wonderful day in the San Juan Islands
