Killer Whales and a Humpback in the Fog

Killer Whales and a Humpback in the Fog

September 12, 2025 – We delayed our trip an hour due to heavy fog and we got really lucky that it began to lift before we left the dock. We traveled north to a report of Bigg’s killer whales near Stuart Island. We got some amazing looks as they cruised past Turn Point lighthouse. Once past the lighthouse, visibility decreased due to fog but we could see some flukes and spy hops from the whales in the fog. As we were watching the family of orca, a humpback whale surfaced in the mix! It was difficult to spot due to the fog so we spent a bit more time with the T75Bs and then went and searched for the humpback whale. We got a couple quick glances as the humpback did single surfacings before going back on a dive. We were able to ID this whale as BCX0519 “Stitch” based on the dorsal fin. It was so cool to have another species of whale pop up as we were watching killer whales, it made for a very fun trip.
