Overcast Killer Whales

Overcast Killer Whales

August 14, 2025 – We left the dock with a report of whales at the edge of our range to the north and possibly heading further away. We also knew that it was pretty windy up there but we decided to take our chances. Then just a few minutes out of the harbor we got a report of whales to the south, out of our range but heading towards us and in calm seas. So Captain JB made the decision to pull a U turn and off we went. It was a long run, but oh was it worth it! We met up with the T19’s as they headed north in Admiralty Inlet abeam of Port Townsend. The whales were zigging and zagging and at one point came up not far from the boat. It was amazing to see 30 year old Galiano with his left leaning dorsal fin and 24 year old Spouter with his wavy fin up close. These two brothers are huge! Their mother, 60 year old Nootka was right there with them. They continued traveling north just off the Whidbey Island shoreline. At one point Nootka and Spouter started hunting. There were a few quick lunges. We were not quite sure what they were chasing or if they caught it, but it was fun to watch them in action. Shortly after the hunt, one of the whales did a huge spy hop. Eventually it was time to make the long run back to Friday Harbor. We had time for one quick stop at Whale Rocks in Cattle Pass to check out the Steller Sea Lions and got a nice look at the Cattle Point Lighthouse too. What a day!
