T99s at the Tip of Our Range

T99s at the Tip of Our Range

August 20, 2025 – August 20, 2025 – We started the day with killer whale reports at the edge of our range both north and south. With beautiful weather conditions we made our way down San Juan channel towards the report just outside of Penn Cove. We traveled through deception pass and over to Polnell Point on Whidbey Island where we found the T99s. This family of Bigg’s killer whales was milling at the surface and then Captain Ivan gave us the update that they were prey sharing. We saw some splashing followed by a couple tail slaps. The conditions were amazing so we got some really amazing views of this family spending time together. After some more milling and tail slaps, they started traveling east into an area of bull kelp. As they surfaced, we noticed some bull kelp dragging on their dorsal fins! We even got a spyhop from a whale that had bull kelp on their rostrum! As we turned to begin the long trip back home, we saw a couple more splashes and spyhops, which was a lovely goodbye from this family of killer whales. We traveled a total of 67 miles this trip!
