Two Families of Orcas

Two Families of Orcas

August 31, 2025 – We headed out with a report of a group of Bigg’s Killer Whales to the north of the San Juans, near Sucia Island. We started our trip with a visit to Clemmens Reef to check out some steller sea lions that have started to trickle back to our area after their summer away for breeding season. Just a short distance away, the family known as the T75Bs was traveling west with their newest addition, an adorable calf born just a few weeks ago. We had some amazing looks as the whales hunted and then passed by the Patos Island lighthouse. After they passed the lighthouse, they doubled back, and suddenly, a large male dorsal fin appeared with them! This male turned out to be T100C “Laurel”, and the two families grouped! It was incredible to see the large range of dorsal fin sizes from newborn to adult male!
