Humpbacks Split Fluke and Zig Zag

Humpbacks Split Fluke and Zig Zag

March 27, 2026 – We had a gorgeous sunny day to go exploring. We left the dock and headed north searching along the way. Our first stop was at Spieden Island were we saw a few Steller Sea Lions and loads of Mouflon (Big Horned) Sheep grazing along the hillside. It was lambing season and we saw a few little ones with their mothers in addition to groups of rams grazing together. We also had a few mature Bald Eagles standing on the ground near the Mouflons. From there we headed west and crossed over into Canada continuing our search. We did a quick pass by Mandarte Island which has been preserved as a nesting island for several species of marine birds including 3 types of Cormorants. Next we headed down Haro Strait with a report of a Humpback in the area. As we were headed to that location, Captain JB and I, noticed some unusual water patterns and as we slowed down 2 Humpbacks surfaced nearby. We had a couple of fluke up dives then some sleepy travel. The Whales were identified as Split Fluke and Zig Zag. Both are known females in the area that have brought back calves in previous years. When it was time to leave we continued around the south end of San Juan Island and had a quick stop to check out an immature Bald Eagle and dozens of Steller Sea Lions hauled out on the rocks and enjoying the swirling currents in Cattle Pass. Another beautiful day on the water.
