Blustery Breaching Humpbacks!

Blustery Breaching Humpbacks!

May 14, 2026 – We had a bit of wind today and scattered showers which added to our sense of adventure.  We headed north after a quick stop at Turn Rock to see if the Sea Otter was still around.  Our next stop was for Steller Sea Lions at Green Point on Spieden island.  The were a handful on the shoreline and more in the water.  We had one really big male that gave us a good look at his massive size and long fins before jumping on to join the others.  Next we had a report of 1 humpback just around the corner by Henry Island and another one heading to that same area.  As we arrived we discovered we had Big Mama heading north and Scuttle heading south.  Soon after they passed each other Big Mama did 2 breaches and a few cartwheels, Scuttle must have known she was there from the sound of her body hitting the water but kept going.  I did get distant shots of a beautiful fluke up dive before it was out of sight.  Big Mama is the mother to at least 8 calves that she has brought back with her to the Salish Sea since she was first documented here in 1997!  Eventually it was time to leave Big Mama and we headed to New Channel to get out of the wind and search for Bald Eagles and Harbor Seals.  It was flat calm and sunny there and we found what we were looking for before heading for home.
