Glassy Calm Waters and Whales

Glassy Calm Waters and Whales

June 13, 2026 – It was another picture-perfect day! The mountains were out and the seas were glassy calm. Our first encounter was just a few miles south of Friday Harbor, where we had 2 humpbacks. They were Divot and her calf from this winter. This is Divot’s 6th known calf. The calf was rolling around at the surface and at one point tipped its rostrum up out of the water. From there, we headed out through Cattle Pass into the Strait of Juan de Fuca. We were a few miles south of the Discovery Islands in Canada when we found the T46B’s. This family group is made up of the mother/grandmother, T46B, who is named Raksha and is 38 years old. She regularly travels with 5 of her 6 living offspring, including the youngest, “Pi,” who was first sighted on March 14, 2026. We love seeing this group as there are lots of little ones that included 3 of Raksha’s grandkids! They were pretty spread out when we arrived but were starting to group up towards the end of our encounter. We had come a long way, so eventually, Captain Bethany said we had to start heading back. She allowed for one last stop at Whale Rocks to check out the Steller Sea Lions. It was all about the drama today. Arguing over the best sleeping platforms and when a huge male jumped into the jacuzzi, all the smaller (some actually quite large) had to get out of the way in a hurry! What a day!
