August 6, 2026 AM – We started our trip to see our new visitor to the area a Sea Otter. It was rolling around at the surface possibly grooming its thick fur. From there we headed north with a report of Bigg’s Killer Whales in the area. We started our encounter near Battle Ship Island. It was really cool to see 4 generations of whales in the T36/T36B family group. They included T36 – Flapjack, her second oldest daughter T36B – Tattertip with her 3 offspring Bhotia, Greenfelder and Auk and one grand offspring named Maple. They were traveling with T137 – Jack is a huge mature male at 24 years of age. He is the one with the big fin with 2 nicks in the trailing edge. The whales took the cut between Battle Ship and Henry islands. We caught up to them as they started east in Spieden Channel. After a few surfacings they took a long dive and changed directions heading towards us. We had a great pass it is always fun to see the little ones as they tend to surface quite high out of the water when they come up for a breath. Eventually it was time to go look for some other critters. As we cruised by the Cactus Islands we found Harbor Seals, a King Fisher and lots of Pigeon Guillemot’s. Next we cruised along south side of Spieden Island where we saw a Bald Eagle, Mouflon Sheep and Fallow Deer. What a day!
