Big Cat Whale Family

Big Cat Whale Family

September 9, 2026– Today was another very memorable trip! We started the afternoon by coming south down San Juan Channel to stop at Whale Rocks. Here, we got to marvel at the massive steller sea lions hauled out enjoying the blue skies. From there, we continued down south and found a number of tufted puffins! Right around the corner, we met up with the T60’s– the big cat family! Mom and her three kids were especially vocal today, so we shut off the boat and dropped our hydrophone in the water to listen to their acoustics. After a lovely performance, the family suddenly decided it was time to split so mom led the charge over the shallow bridge connecting Smith and Minor Island. We took that as a sign to head back toward the harbor. Back in San Juan Channel, we ended up finding the T65B family group as they were milling along the shoreline of Lopez Island. They eventually turned out and started escorting us back home toward Friday Harbor.
