Whales At Trial Island

Whales At Trial Island

September 21, 2026 – It is fun to head out on a whale-watching trip from Friday Harbor and end up watching whales in another country! It was that kind of day. We started with a stop at Turn Rock to see our new visitor to the area, a sea otter. It was munching down on something at the surface. Captains Ivan and Elah decided to continue south with our next stop at Whale Rocks to see the Steller sea lions. While many of them snoozed, this one big guy came up out of the water and gave us a great look at how big and mobile these adult males are! From there, we headed west and ended up encountering orcas near Trial Island, which is just south of Victoria, BC, Canada. The whales were moving slowly, then got into some kelp beds and appeared to be looking for food, probably a harbor seal. They came out and swam around the south end of Trial Island, hugging the shoreline. We got some fantastic looks in calmer waters as they cruised up the east side of the island. The family of Bigg’s Killer Whales that we encountered were the T109A’s. They included the 36-year-old mother, Frio, her 14-year-old son, Garrett, and 4 other offspring – 12-year-old Argyle, 8-year-old Riley, 5-year-old Wieland, and 2-year-old Weiss. Eventually, it was time to head for home. We had gorgeous views of the Olympics and Mt. Baker, topping off another great day on the water!
